It should not take a person with a rocket science degree to run the software and get reliable results.įor some reason this software does not like Nikon gear and especially Nikon teleconverters. I bought this software to take the guess work out of fine tuning and to make it quick and easy to do. I have done dozens of lens and camera combos now with other intelligent people here with me, and every time FoCal struggles to come up with confident reliable results. IMO, the software needs to be rewritten to accept and analyze typical field files. Reikan FoCal is a software tool that takes control of your camera.

I pretty much never shoot like that in the field, yet I get very sharp usable images. CalibrationAider is free monitor calibration software from Imaging Associates. For a camera as detailed as a D800 and an $8000 lens, the program should not be having the slightest amount of difficulty getting reliable sharp detailed files. In other words, you have done everything humanly possible to ensure razor sharp detailed images, yet they are not good enough for the program.

you have VR turned off, the lens is locked down on a solid tripod, and you are using ISO 100 with reasonable shutter speeds. By the end of it all, and after running it many dozens of times now, I have no faith whatsoever in the final results. I also always get messages that say the results have not been reliable and it needs to take a bunch more test images. It will start out with it being "EXCELLENT" but by the end of running it, it ends up "POOR".

The FoCal method uses a flat target which must be in a parallel plane with the camera's sensor. If your test target is tilted in one direction or another with respect to the camera's sensor, then your results will show defects due to the varying distances each part of the test target is from the sensor.
